If you haven’t been keeping a list of gift ideas throughout the year yet, now is the time to get started. There are just a few more months left until this year’s holiday gift giving season.

If you do have a list, you’re ahead of the game. I personally like to keep an ear out for things people are interested in all throughout the year, and I note them on a gift idea list as I have time. That way when August and September roll around, I can actually start organizing and planning my gift giving and buying. This makes it easier on the budget, helps prevent last-minute frantic shopping, and of course allows me to know I’m getting people things they actually want.

It’s not too late to get started with your gift ideas list for this years holiday season though. Getting started now will allow you to actually enjoy the season more, instead of being stressed out about not having gift for someone, or worse… not even knowing what gives you should get them.

At the very least, create a starter list for your immediate family and loved ones. This could include your spouse, your children, and your grandchildren if you have them. If you don’t have any initial ideas for gifts they might want this holiday, then simply note down a few things you know about them. Write down their hobbies for example, or books they like to read. If you know what type of music they like, make note of that too. Even if you don’t know the exact albums and artists they enjoy, knowing style of music they like is a step in the right direction.

If you have a lot of people to buy gifts for, then start lists for non-family members as well. Or start a general gift ideas listed where you can keep generic ideas that might work for many friends and acquaintances.

The point is, it’s time to get started.

When creating your gift ideas lists, put them in some form that will be easy to keep with you at all times. This way, if you happen to be out and about with out any one else around, you can quickly look at your list and see if there are is something you can pick up while you’re there. By picking things up a little at a time during your every day errands, you’ll find yourself more than ready for the holidays with plenty of time to spare.

Having the list with you when you’re out shopping is also useful if you come across new ideas. If you have a teenage boy who likes to play video games for example, you may not know offhand the exact ones he already has. So you can either make a list of those he does have so that you can keep an eye out for similar types of games, or you can simply note down games you come across while you’re shopping, and then check when you get home to see whether or not that’s what he has.

This is a handy way to buy gifts for movie lovers, book lovers, collectors, and anyone else who has numerous items in a series or collection.

Many neighborhoods have a trash service that will take away a Christmas tree with zero hassles. For those who can go this route, excellent. But there are times when that’s not an option. In that case, there are several simple alternative ways to solve the problem.

Method #1 Chopping

If you have a chainsaw, electric or gas, it takes only a minute or two to chop a dried Christmas tree into small pieces. Since most Christmas trees are pine, fir or spruce, the fragments make good gardening material. Spread them around the garden and work them into the soil.

Take care not to leave the parts above ground unless you have a means for dealing with beetles and other insects. Carpenter ants and termites love fresh wood to bore into and they’re happy to move into your home when they’re done. Also, have a plan for dealing with the needles. They’re acidic so they can alter the pH of your soil, causing moss to grow rapidly. That can be good or bad, depending on your needs.

Method #2 Burning

If you have a wood stove or wood-burning fireplace, burning the tree can have a number of beneficial effects. It requires less chopping than method #1 and it can add a lovely smell to the home.

But there are a couple of things to watch out for.

A Christmas tree after the holidays may be dry enough to shed a lot of needles, but it will still be pretty green by wood burning standards. Be prepared for a little extra smoke. Ensure your chimney flue works well. Also, a low heat fire will produce more ash and chemicals that layer the inside of your chimney.

Those problems can be easily overcome by adding a little fireplace cleaner to the fire. These small sticks (usually copper sulfate) prevent any tarry compounds, like creosote, from cooling and depositing onto the inside of your chimney.

Method #3 Ponds

Some homeowners have a large fish pond in the yard. Christmas trees make for good ‘houses’ for fish. The branches provide a place for shy creatures to hide. Ensure that the needles don’t alter the pH of the water excessively by adding it a small section at a time, with minimal amounts of needles.

Method #4 Donate

Even when a trash service won’t pick up your tree, some charities will. In rare cases, they can still use the tree as a decoration. In some cases, they are acting as part of a community mulching effort. The trees are collected then used as in method #1. In most cases, they are simply engaged in recycling efforts as part of a heartfelt cause.

Whatever their motives, they will often pick up the tree for no cost or a nominal fee. The money is used to cover expenses such as gasoline and disposal fees where they deliver the tree. You can solve your problem and donate to a worthy cause at the same time. That’s the classic definition of a win-win scenario.

What should you eat for Christmas Breakfast? What makes for a traditional Christmas Breakfast? Well in our household we have adopted one of the Christmas Breakfast Ideas which has now become traditional!

In fact I would go as far as to say there is only one Christmas Breakfast idea and that is Smoked Salmon, Scrambled Eggs and Bucks Fizz - which is not one of the premade drinks that one can buy now but instead is half a glass of champagne and half a glass of fresh orange. It really is an amazing combination and sets you off for the day of festivity and fun and allows you to indulge yourself.

Now for the best way to enjoy your scrambled eggs you should make sure that you add a little smoked salmon to the scrambled eggs a minute or two before you serve them.

For the younger members of the family you might want to think about adjusting the percentages of fresh orange juice and champagne!

It used to be that families had no rules about gift buying. Everyone bought for everyone else, and gifts were exchanged when the family all got together somewhere during the Christmas season. So what sort of Christmas Gift Exchange Games can you play with your family and friends to add a little more to the pleasure of the Christmas Gifts?

These days, it’s more common for people to draw a name out of a hat or get assigned a person to buy for. Or the family creates a type of “white elephant” exchange instead of having family members buy for individuals in particular. So, what many families need is a fun way to exchange the gifts, whether they be for a specific person or whether they are ‘white elephant” type gifts.

If the family members drew names, there are several fun things you can do. The gifts can be hidden and clues given as to the location of the gifts. So, if you arrive at grandma’s house with your gift for Aunt Martha, you might tuck her gift into a kitchen cabinet. Then you’d create a series of clue as to here it is. You might say, “Cinnamon lurks here” or “it’s the hub of the home, but not always the home of the hub”.

The clues can be silly or deadly serious. They can be designed so someone will know where to find their present in just minutes, or designed so that it takes a series of clues to get someone right to their gift. If the group is small or the house particularly large, and the participants have the time you can always create a hunt where more than one tip is left and one tip leads to another, which leads to another until the gift is finally found.

Why should the kids have all the fun? Create some fun gift exchange ideas for adults. Whether the family is doing a name draw and exchanging regular gifts or not, you can have some good family fun with a white elephant gift exchange. How about a themed white elephant gift exchange? If the family is into fishing, you could create that as a theme. Everyone must bring a gift related to fishing (this could be anything from sporting goods items, to a singing bass that goes on the wall). It could be a hand held electronic fishing game or a board game with fishing as a theme.

In that same vein, you could create a “cooking” white elephant exchange or a camping themed gift exchange. Again, it’s more about what will please members of the family than anything. Then create some fun games for the exchange itself. Perhaps everyone draws a number and gets to pick their gifts from the pile in the middle based on their number. Perhaps you begin the game that way, but then also people to ’steal’ someone else’s gift if they choose.

You can require that the gift recipient shakes a gift, studies a gift and makes a good, educated guess as to its contents before opening it. If they are right, they can “steal” someone else’s gift, but if they are wrong, they keep theirs. Add to the silliness factor by playing a card game and dictating that people can’t get their gift and open it until they win a hand in the card game (ideally something fairly quick like poker or rummy).

The idea behind any family gift exchange should be enjoying each other’s company and enjoying the Christmas spirit. As long as it’s fun and engaging, there’s no reason why the adults in the family can’t have some fun games for exchanging gifts just the kids might.
